Young learners are capable of a great deal of higher-order thinking yet too many teaching and learning activities require students to use only lower-order thinking. HOT Skills breaks down theory into practice so you won’t miss an opportunity to help young learners develop logical, critical, and creative thinking skills.

Dr. Saifer provides numerous strategies for infusing play-based activities and interactions that promote higher-order thinking across all content areas and throughout the day. Just as establishing good nutrition habits early sets the foundation for a healthier life, developing basic-level HOT skills sets the foundation for a more productive and purposeful life.

“I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book! I like that the book breaks the different orders of thinking into three easy to understand levels (LOT, MOT, HOT). The “snapshots” are helpful to really “feel” what the thinking is like in the classroom setting. The “ThinkingGame” ideas and activities are phenomenal! They are easy to integrate into the classroom setting, fit a wide variety of curricular areas, and truly focus on the thinking of each individual child (vs having the correct answer).” -Learning Magazine (kindergarten teacher reviewer comments)

“Through a well-developed theoretical background and excellent practical suggestions for teachers, Dr. Saifer addresses the most important educational issue of our time, how to engage students in higher-order thinking. Teachers will find this book immensely useful as they seek to prepare their students to thrive and to advance a just and democratic society.” – Randy Hitz, Dean Emeritus, Graduate School of Education, Portland State University and past governing board member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

“Dr. Saifer provides clear and useful guidance for teachers on how to promote deep and creative thinking, and eloquently reminds us of the kind of teaching that touches the heart, engages the mind.” – Stephanie Feeney, PhD, Professor Emertia, University of Hawaii- Manoa

“Exceptionally organized and thoroughly user friendly in presentation, HOT Skills is an especially recommended addition to school district, college, and university library Teacher Education instructional resources collections.” – The Midwest Book Review, Education Shelf

“Dr. Saifer has compiled an engaging guide built on research and best practice that propels teachers to use artistic license to create innovative and imaginative activities that draw the children into the realm of higher-order thinking.” – Karen Ortiz, PhD, Vice President, Helios Education Foundation
